Cool Beginnings

December 18, 2017

Exiting the airport at Keflavik, I experienced the first Icelandic snow flurry. I didn’t even button up in the 25 degree temperature. It felt so good coming from California heat and dryness.

It was 8 AM in the morning and it was dark; at 10 AM it was still dark -- Welcome to the far north in winter. I would have only 4 to 5 hours of daylight during the stay but quickly became used to the darkness and cold, it didn’t really bother me. The fresh air did wonders for my soul and fresh spring water that you could drink right of the tap was something unheard of in this day and age.

Susan and Bruce immediately had fun taking pictures with wooden statues of vikings and fuzzy polar bears -- And the Shopping -- as Icelandic knitted blankets and sweaters caught Susan's attention, to some of Bruce’s dismay as we found out the immediate cost of the island nation. With everything imported, sticker shock on a $4 banana made us cringe but not having to buy bottled water evened it out. And staying in Reykjavik, walking the city capital was a cool and icy breeze.

The day cleared up and we could see snow capped mountains in the distance finally realizing we were clearly not in Kansas anymore. Going away for the holidays and being in someplace as Christmasy as Iceland was definitely the right choice. Stay tuned dear readers and find out if Susan finds a stone treasure.

And the first 5 subscribers to my website might just get a little Icelandic Gift from me. Spread the news and follow along. Cheers.
